Finally the weather has broken. A cold front with some rain came in during the night. The wind also came up and swept the heat away. By 9 am the temperature had dropped to 20 C and actually cool. Breakfast was scrambled eggs and bacon which Jansci made. It was excellent. We also had a new pastry, a bun filled with cottage cheese... a very nice sweet filling.

Today it is planned to go to Fertod in Northwestern Hungary. On the Austrian border. This is more than a 2 h drive but there will be a boat trip and a “train” trip to an Austrian village.
In the car trip you could tell the wind was strong but once near the water it was even more pronounced... almost like a hurricane. In one of the villages along the way we came very close to having an car accident, a lady pulled out without looking. Fortunately she stopped. We could not do anything to stop on time. A similar event happened again near the end of our trip, again we avoided a collision.
The lake trip was on a large enclosed /open-top boat. Although the waves were high, the ride was very smooth. We travelled up Lake Fertod over the Austrian border and back; it took more than an hour. The lake was shallow and reminded me of lake Scugog.
After the boat trip we looked at some lake homes. These were very large and the roofs covered with thatch made from the reeds in the lake. We did not go to the end of the peer since it was very windy.

A short drive later and we were near a small train- actually no tracks. It was a motorized cart which pulled two “cars”. The trip through the woods on a nice road only took 15 minutes and we near a pretty Austrian village. We took several pictures of the nicely decorated homes and went to an outdoor pub for some drinks. The waitress only spoke German and there was only German on the menu; odd considering the people that were travelling the short distance from Hungary.

After travelling back to the car we were off to a place at the end of a long narrow road. There seemed to be no homes on this road and it lead on to a place in history. This was the border crossing so protected by the Communists between 1947 and 1989...part of the Iron Curtain. Although it seemed in the middle of nowhere, there were a lot of visitors. It was getting to be after 5 pm and we were all getting hungry.

The restaurant was not far. But it was nice and clean and had a good menu. Nancy and Gyorgyi had a chicken schnitzel , Jansci a roasted pork dish and I went for the marharhus polkott with galuska; similar to the goulash I make at home. I don't know what it was... the wine or the food but I started to get acid reflux so I could not finish it. There was also a lot of caraway in the sauce which might have caused it.

The drive back was faster, well, I did get a little sleep so it seemed even faster. The roads were not crowded... they also have a restriction on truck-travel on the weekends.

We took the high road back at M0 and Budatennyi – I will take this to Nagykanizsa later in the week.
